The photo competition “Crumbs of Memory – material traces of the Brzesko Jewish Community” organized by the Association “Memory and Dialogue. Common History” and the County and City Public Library in Brzesko has just been adjudicated.
Competition participants were to take the most interesting photograph showing the material traces of the presence of Jews in Brzesko. The participants competed in two categories: youth from secondary schools and adults. A total of 51 photos were submitted to the competition: 26 in category I and 25 in category II. Most of the photos show the Jewish cemetery at Czarnowiejska st.; some pictures portray tenement houses where Jews used to live.
The jury comprised of representatives of the organizers of the competition and several professional photographers, selected the winners:
Category I (youth from secondary schools) – Nina Dubiel for the photo entitled “Peaceful”
Category II (adults) – Ireneusz Węglowski for the photo entitled “Tree of Life”.
The jury took into account the artistic value of the photos and their technical correctness. It was especially appreciated that these two photos are not only a reportage showing the tombstones in the cemetery; they convey not only facts, but also feelings, make us reflect on the fate of Brzesko Jews and the passing time.
According to the rules of the competition, the authors of the two winning photos will receive a cash prize of PLN 500 each, and all participants will receive diplomas. The awards will be presented at 3:00 PM on Saturday, September 10 at the Poviat and City Public Library in Brzesko during the commemorative events on the 80th anniversary of the extermination of Brzesko Jews. From among all the submitted photos, the commission also selected 28 pictures to be displayed at the exhibition accompanying the event.
